Ethiopia participates in WIPO General Assembly

Ethiopia is advancing its intellectual property (IP) ecosystem through high-level discussions at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) General Assembly. Led by Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority Director General Woldu Yilka, the delegation explored strategic partnerships to enhance IP’s role in national development. 

During bilateral talks with WIPO Director General Darren Tang, Ethiopia outlined its priorities in copyright modernization, patent system strengthening, and leveraging IP for innovation-driven growth. "Ethiopia recognizes intellectual property as a catalyst for economic transformation," stated Woldu, highlighting recent policy reforms and capacity-building initiatives.

WIPO reaffirmed its support for Ethiopia’s IP modernization, particularly in aligning national systems with international standards while preserving indigenous knowledge rights. Discussions with WIPO Africa Division Director Loretta Asiedu focused on tailored technical assistance, including digital IP infrastructure and examiner training programs. 

The engagement underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to harnessing IP for its Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda, with copyright and trademark protections seen as vital for creative industries and tech startups. The delegation also explored WIPO’s technology transfer mechanisms to support Ethiopia’s manufacturing and agricultural innovation priorities. 

With Ethiopia’s Permanent Mission to Geneva facilitating ongoing dialogue, these talks mark a strategic step in integrating IP considerations into the country’s digital economy and industrial transformation roadmaps. WIPO’s specialized programs are expected to accelerate Ethiopia’s emergence as an IP hub in East Africa.
