Kenya has taken
decisive steps to bolster its data governance infrastructure with the official
launch of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) Nyeri Regional
Office and the unveiling of its 2025-2029 Strategic Plan. Cabinet Secretary for
Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo who presided
over the dual ceremony at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), reiterated
Kenya's commitment to digital rights protection as a cornerstone of its
thriving digital economy.

The new regional
office expands ODPC's presence beyond Nairobi, bringing critical data
protection services closer to Central Kenya's growing tech ecosystem. CS Kabogo
noted that the five-year strategic blueprint will enhance Kenya's
attractiveness as an ICT investment destination while safeguarding citizen
privacy. "This plan operationalizes our constitutional commitment to
digital rights through practical regulatory frameworks and public awareness
initiatives," he stated during the launch.
Developed with
technical support from GIZ Kenya through Strathmore Business School, the
strategic plan builds on ODPC's first-term achievements including 11,226
registered data controllers, 107 compliance audits, and resolution of 98.5% of
citizen complaints. The new phase prioritizes policy framework strengthening,
institutional capacity building, and compliance enhancement across
sectors.
The event brought
together key stakeholders including Data Commissioner, Immaculate Kassait,
Postal Corporation CEO, John Tonui, and DeKUT Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter
Muchiri. CS Kabogo later inspected the adjacent Communications Authority
office, commending its service delivery standards.

This expansion comes
as Kenya implements its Digital Economy Blueprint, with data protection
identified as critical for building trust in emerging technologies like AI and
cloud computing. The Nyeri office will serve as a hub for compliance training,
dispute resolution, and public education for the Mount Kenya region's
enterprises and institutions.
