A high-level delegation from Zimbabwe’s Parliament has concluded a knowledge-exchange visit to Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), seeking insights into Ghana’s successful digital innovation ecosystem. The seven-member team, led by Hon. Vusumuzi Moyo, Chairperson of Zimbabwe’s Portfolio Committee on ICT, engaged in intensive discussions with GIFEC’s Acting Administrator Sofo Tanko Rashid-Computer and technical teams.

The study tour focused on Ghana’s innovation hub framework, which has become a benchmark for nurturing startups and accelerating digital entrepreneurship across West Africa. Zimbabwean lawmakers examined GIFEC’s operational models for rural connectivity, digital skills development, and public-private partnerships that have positioned Ghana as a leader in grassroots technological empowerment.

“Ghana’s experience in creating an enabling environment for tech-driven SMEs offers valuable lessons for Zimbabwe’s own digital transformation agenda,” stated Hon. Moyo during the exchange. The delegation paid particular attention to Ghana’s strategies for funding ICT infrastructure in underserved communities and supporting youth-led innovation through incubation programs.

GIFEC showcased its flagship initiatives including the Rural Telephony Project and Digital Transformation Centers, which have expanded internet access to over 3 million previously unconnected Ghanaians. The Zimbabwean team expressed interest in adapting elements of this model to bridge digital divides in their homeland.

This South-South cooperation comes as Zimbabwe implements its National Digital Economy Strategy, with Parliament playing an active role in shaping inclusive ICT policies. The visit’s outcomes will inform legislative reforms aimed at stimulating Zimbabwe’s startup ecosystem and improving universal access to digital services. Both nations agreed to establish ongoing technical exchanges to share implementation experiences as they work toward the AU’s Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa.
