The Ministry of
Communication, Technology, and Innovation, in collaboration with UNICEF and the
United Nations University, has further strengthened its partnership with
Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Sierra Leone. The focus of
these discussions has been on integrating open-source methodologies, tools, and
philosophies into higher education to foster innovation and digital
inclusivity.
Central to the
dialogue was the exploration of practical strategies for embedding open-source
principles into existing academic coursework. The approach emphasizes
immediate, actionable steps such as incorporating industry best practices and
hands-on learning into current modules—while laying the groundwork for more
comprehensive curriculum reforms in the long term. This phased strategy ensures
that students are gradually introduced to the core values of open technology,
including collaboration, transparency, and collective problem-solving.

A key aspect of
the conversation was the role of universities in shaping Sierra Leone’s digital
transformation. Limkokwing University expressed its commitment to contributing
to the development of the country’s forthcoming National Open-Source Policy. By
aligning academic initiatives with national digital strategies, the university
aims to play a pivotal role in cultivating a tech-savvy workforce equipped with
open-source skills.
By fostering a
community of practice that supports both educators and learners, the initiative
seeks to create an ecosystem where open-source thinking becomes a cornerstone
of academic and professional development. This effort not only prepares
students for the evolving demands of the digital economy but also positions
Sierra Leone as a forward-thinking player in the global open-source
movement.
