Ethiopia's Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed has presented Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates with the Ethiopia
Special Order, the nation's highest state honor at Ethiopia's National Palace. The prestigious award recognizes 25 years of transformative work by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation across Ethiopia's critical development sectors.
Prime Minister
Abiy outlined Gates' evolution from technology pioneer to global
philanthropist, commending his foundation's respectful partnership approach and
measurable impacts in healthcare, agricultural development, digital
identification systems, and innovation programs. The award specifically
acknowledges the Foundation's long-term commitment to Ethiopia, characterized
by what the Prime Minister described as "humility, respect, and an
unwavering belief in human equality."

Since
establishing operations in Ethiopia in 1999, the Gates Foundation has
collaborated with national partners to strengthen healthcare systems, boost
agricultural productivity through initiatives like the Agricultural
Transformation Institute, and support the country's digital ID program. The
Foundation's work has contributed to significant reductions in child mortality
and infectious disease rates while creating economic opportunities for
smallholder farmers.
The evening's
proceedings underscored Ethiopia's appreciation for development partnerships
that combine global expertise with local knowledge, a model the Gates
Foundation has exemplified through its quarter-century of engagement. As Gates
accepted the honor, both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to
advancing equitable development and technological innovation across Ethiopia.

This
recognition marks the first time Ethiopia has awarded its highest honor to a
technology philanthropist, signaling the growing importance of strategic
partnerships in achieving the nation's development ambitions. The ceremony
concluded with mutual pledges to deepen collaboration in emerging priority
areas including climate-smart agriculture and digital health solutions.
