Mozambique moves closer to joining the Smart Africa Alliance

The CEO of Smart Africa, Lacina Koné has met with Mozambique’s Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation, Dr. Américo Muchanga on the sidelines of Mobile World Congress 2025 (MWC25) in Barcelona. The discussions centered on Mozambique’s intention to join the Smart Africa Alliance, a pan-African initiative aimed at accelerating the continent’s digital transformation through collaboration, innovation, and policy reform.

The meeting also highlighted Mozambique’s key digital initiatives and explored opportunities for collaboration at upcoming Smart Africa events, including the Transform Africa Summit 2025. This engagement underscores the growing momentum behind regional efforts to bridge the digital divide and harness technology for sustainable development.

The discussions also emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in achieving Africa’s digital transformation goals. By joining the Smart Africa Alliance, Mozambique would gain access to a network of 36 member states, all working together to create a connected, inclusive, and digitally empowered continent.

Lacina Koné welcomed Mozambique’s interest in joining the alliance, stating, “Mozambique’s commitment to digital transformation is commendable, and we are excited about the prospect of welcoming them into the Smart Africa family. Together, we can accelerate progress toward a single digital market for Africa, where innovation and collaboration drive sustainable development.”

The meeting also highlighted the upcoming Transform Africa Summit 2025 , one of Smart Africa’s flagship events. The summit, which brings together leaders from government, industry, and civil society, serves as a platform for sharing insights, forging partnerships, and driving action on Africa’s digital transformation agenda.

Dr. Muchanga expressed Mozambique’s enthusiasm for participating in the summit, noting that it provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the country’s digital initiatives and learn from the experiences of other African nations. “The Transform Africa Summit is a critical forum for advancing our digital transformation goals. We look forward to contributing to the discussions and exploring new opportunities for collaboration,” he said.
