The National Information
Technology Agency (NITA) has convened an Early Market Engagement session with
key stakeholders to advance discussions on the proposed Ghana Electronic
Document Wallet (GEDW) initiative, a national digital system designed to transform
the issuance, storage, and verification of official documents.
The engagement brought
together representatives from government institutions, academia, the financial
sector, technology companies, startups, and private sector actors to contribute
to the design and implementation framework of the proposed ecosystem.
The GEDW initiative is
expected to serve as a secure digital platform that enables citizens,
businesses, and institutions to manage and share verified digital credentials
efficiently, while strengthening trust in digital transactions across both
public and private sectors.
According to NITA, the
system is designed to enhance digital trust and interoperability between
institutions, reduce document fraud, and streamline administrative processes.
It will also provide citizens with greater control over their personal data and
improve access to services through secure digital authentication mechanisms.
Public Key Infrastructure
(PKI) is expected to play a central role in ensuring secure issuance and
verification of digital credentials within the ecosystem, supporting the
integrity and reliability of transactions across platforms.
Speaking at the engagement,
NITA Director-General Ing. Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor emphasized the importance of
trusted digital systems in supporting national development and improving
service delivery.
Officials from the Ministry
of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, including Director for
Innovation Emmanuel Ofori, reaffirmed government commitment to a
citizen-centred approach to digital transformation.
A technical presentation
delivered by Solomon Kofi Richardson, Head of Technical Services at NITA,
outlined the proposed system architecture, governance framework, and
implementation roadmap for the GEDW ecosystem.
Stakeholders at the session
discussed opportunities for collaboration and highlighted the potential of the
initiative to significantly improve efficiency in document management and
verification processes across sectors.
The proposed Ghana
Electronic Document Wallet is positioned as a key pillar in the country’s
broader digital transformation agenda, aimed at building a secure,
interoperable, and citizen-focused digital ecosystem.
