The Universal Postal Union has
underscored the growing importance of postal networks in supporting digital
transformation, connectivity, and financial inclusion during the International
Telecommunication Union’s Global Symposium for Regulators held in Ankara,
Türkiye.
The symposium brought
together heads of national telecommunications and ICT regulatory authorities
from around the world to discuss emerging regulatory challenges and
opportunities shaping the global digital landscape.

Representing the Universal
Postal Union at the high-level segment titled “Anticipating: Are We Ready for
What’s Next?”, Siva Somasundram, Director of Policy, Regulation and Markets at
the UPU participated in discussions focused on the increasing convergence
between postal and digital services.
The discussions examined the
need for coordinated and inclusive regulatory frameworks capable of
strengthening Digital Public Infrastructure, expanding meaningful connectivity,
and ensuring that underserved communities are not excluded from ongoing digital
transformation efforts.

According to the UPU, postal
networks can play a critical role in improving access to essential digital
services, supporting e-commerce growth, advancing financial inclusion, and
providing trusted last-mile connectivity solutions in both urban and rural communities.
Drawing on the
organisation’s experience in postal reform and digital transformation,
Somasundram highlighted how postal infrastructure can complement broader
national and global digital inclusion strategies.
Stakeholders at the
symposium also explored how regulatory collaboration across sectors can help
countries better prepare for emerging technologies and evolving digital
ecosystems while maintaining equitable access and sustainable development
objectives.
