ITU advances strategic planning for 2028–2031 at Ministerial Retreat

The
International Telecommunication Union has convened a Ministerial Retreat for
its Council Member States, focusing on shaping its future direction in an
increasingly dynamic global digital environment.
The
session was led by ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin, who emphasized
the importance of collaboration and strategic alignment in defining the Union’s
next phase of growth and impact. She acknowledged the role of incoming Council
Chair, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun
Tijani, commending his leadership in inspiring discussions and guiding
engagement among member states during the retreat.

During
the meeting, the ITU Council Working Group convened to develop the
organization’s Strategic and Financial Plan for the 2028–2031 period. The
discussions focused on setting clear priorities, aligning financial resources,
and ensuring measurable outcomes in response to the evolving digital landscape.
The
planning process builds on reforms and transformation efforts implemented over
the past three years, with a continued emphasis on expanding connectivity,
bridging the digital divide, and strengthening the ITU’s role in global digital
development.
The
outcomes of the retreat are expected to guide the Union’s efforts to support
member states in adapting to emerging technologies while advancing inclusive
and sustainable digital transformation worldwide.
