The
Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), with support from Veriground Weather
Networks, has commissioned an Automatic Weather Station at Achimota School as
part of activities marking this year’s National Meteorological Awareness Month.
The
ceremony also featured the inauguration of the Achimota School Climate Club to
promote students’ interest in weather, climate science, and environmental
sustainability.

The
newly installed station will enable the collection of real-time weather data,
including maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and
wind direction. Four thermometers housed in a Stevenson Screen were also
installed to support weather observation and practical learning activities at
the school.
Speaking
at the event, Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations at GMet, Ignatius
Kweku Williams, emphasized the need to expand Ghana’s weather observation
network to improve forecasting and climate services. He noted that the
Adopt-A-Weather Station Initiative encourages organizations and schools to
support the installation and maintenance of weather monitoring infrastructure.
The
Country Representative of Veriground Weather Networks, John Sanders, said the
partnership aims to provide students with practical exposure to weather
monitoring and climate data, allowing them to interact with real-time
information and understand its relevance to everyday life.

The
commissioning of the weather station was performed by GMet’s Deputy
Director-General in charge of General Services, Vivian Abla Kally. Assistant
Headmaster in charge of Administration at Achimota School, Kwabena Boateng,
expressed appreciation to GMet and its partners for selecting the school to
benefit from the initiative and pledged that the facility would be effectively
utilized for learning and observation.
The
installation forms part of broader efforts by GMet and its partners to expand
Ghana’s weather observation network while strengthening climate awareness and
education among young people.
