Burundi
has inaugurated its first 100 percent solar-powered electric vehicle charging
infrastructure, marking a significant step toward the adoption of electric
mobility in the country. The project was launched with the support of GEM e-Mobility and placed under the patronage of
the Ministry of Infrastructures, Equipment and Social Housing and the Ministry
of Finance, Budget and Digital Economy.
The inauguration ceremony brought together government
officials, financial institutions, and international partners involved in
advancing sustainable transport solutions. During the event, the Minister of
Finance highlighted the strategic importance of the investment, noting that the
development of electric mobility infrastructure could help reduce the country’s
dependence on fuel imports while creating new economic opportunities.

The initiative was introduced with
opening remarks from the representative of the Governor of Bujumbura Province,
while the Executive Director of GEM e-Mobility outlined the technical vision
behind the project and its ambition to position Burundi as a regional pioneer
in electric mobility.
Representatives from the Embassy of France in Burundi also expressed
support for the project, emphasizing the role of Franco-Burundian partnerships
in strengthening innovation and business collaboration. Financial backing for
the project was provided by CRDB Bank Burundi,
which reaffirmed its commitment to supporting sustainable infrastructure
development.
The charging station integrates solar
power generation, intelligent energy management systems, and real-time electric
vehicle charging capabilities. Developed by GEM e-Mobility, a subsidiary of Solio Group, the project was co-funded by CRDB
Bank Burundi and supported by several partners including KCB Bank Burundi, SOCABU,
and Brarudi S.A..
Officials
said the initiative demonstrates how Africa’s solar energy potential, combined
with local technological expertise and partnerships, can contribute to
transforming urban transport and accelerating the transition toward cleaner
mobility solutions.
