The
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey
George, has inaugurated the RoboTechLabs Project at the University of Mines and
Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa, reaffirming the government’s commitment to
developing Ghana’s technological capacity and human capital.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister described the
initiative as a strategic investment in Ghana’s future, aimed at positioning
the country within the global digital industrial landscape driven by robotics,
automation, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing systems.
The RoboTechLabs Project is a
collaboration between develoPPP/ibes AG and UMaT, supported by the German
Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The initiative seeks
to enhance youth employability and participation in emerging robotics and
automation fields, contributing to Ghana’s broader digital innovation and
industrial transformation agenda.
Hon. Nartey George expressed
gratitude to the development partners for supporting the country’s
technological ecosystem and investing in the next generation of innovators. He
emphasized that the laboratory represents more than a physical facility, highlighting
its role in equipping Ghana with the capabilities to design, deploy, and govern
emerging technologies.

The
Minister underscored that countries successfully integrating robotics and
automation into education and industrial systems gain a competitive edge in the
evolving global economy. He also outlined that Ghana’s digital transformation
agenda rests on three pillars: expanding resilient digital infrastructure,
accelerating digital skills development, and strengthening innovation
ecosystems to support high-value technology industries. RoboTechLabs directly
supports the second and third pillars by bridging the gap between academic
instruction and industry application, advancing the country’s ambition to
become a leading digital hub in Africa.
