The
Malawi
Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the
growth of the country’s media sector and maintaining dialogue with broadcasting
licensees as the industry adapts to rapid technological change.
The
assurance was given by MACRA Director General Mayamiko
Nkoloma during a
consultative meeting with the Broadcasters Association of Malawi (BAM), where stakeholders discussed
operational challenges affecting the development of the broadcasting industry.

During
the meeting, Nkoloma emphasized that while the regulator remains ready to
support the sector, broadcasters must also take proactive steps to adopt modern
technologies and innovative business models to remain competitive in an
increasingly digital environment.
Representatives
from the Broadcasters Association of Malawi raised concerns about several
issues affecting their operations, including high operational costs, license
fees and tower hosting levies. They also highlighted concerns about policies
they believe are negatively affecting the financial sustainability of
broadcasting businesses.

Despite
the challenges raised, both parties acknowledged the important role the
broadcasting sector plays in national development and agreed to establish a
framework for continued engagement to address the issues identified and support
the sector’s long-term growth.
