The
inaugural Africa Women in Space Conference 2025 opened today at Strathmore
University in Nairobi, marking a significant step toward advancing gender
inclusion in the continent’s space sector. The event, organised by Women in
Space Kenya, will run from 27 to 28 November.

The
conference was officially opened by Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey, Director General
of the Kenya Space Agency, who underscored Kenya’s commitment to integrating
gender perspectives into space science and technology. He highlighted ongoing
initiatives, including the UNOOSA Gender Mainstreaming Toolkit, which is
helping create pathways for young women to participate in global conferences,
access mentorship, secure internships and pursue careers in STEM fields.
Brig.
Kipkosgey urged participants to use the gathering as an opportunity to connect,
collaborate and build momentum for a more inclusive African space ecosystem. He
noted that the continent’s space ambitions must reflect its full range of
talent to drive sustainable progress.

With
his remarks, he formally opened the conference, setting the tone for two days
dedicated to dialogue, learning and coordinated action to support women’s
growth and leadership in Africa’s space industry.
