Kenyan President, William
Ruto has made a plea to Starlink, the satellite internet constellation operated
by SpaceX, to consider reducing the cost of internet access in Kenya. This
appeal was made during President Ruto's visit to the Starlink and SpaceX Factory
in Los Angeles, USA.
Starlink, a project by
SpaceX, aims to provide broadband internet access globally, including in Kenya.
President Ruto believes that Starlink's services offer a promising solution to
achieving universal internet access in Kenya, especially in areas where
traditional infrastructure limitations exist.
He expressed his optimism
about the positive impact of Starlink's investment on Kenya's connectivity
landscape, adding that it has the potential to significantly improve high-speed
internet access in remote villages, schools, and various institutions
throughout the country, thereby unlocking the full potential of Kenya's digital
economy.

Starlink announced its
service availability in Kenya in July and appointed Karibu Connect as its first
authorized reseller for satellite internet. This move came shortly after
Safaricom Plc also revealed plans to offer a similar product.
Back in January of the
same year, Starlink had already announced its intentions to enter the Kenyan
market, with the launch expected in the second quarter of 2023. The company,
powered by SpaceX, was waiting for service coverage and regulatory approvals to
proceed.
President William Ruto
further suggested a collaborative effort between Starlink and its authorized dealer
in Kenya, Karibu Connect, to ensure a more connected and innovative future for
the country. This partnership could potentially bring about greater
accessibility and affordability of internet services, further advancing Kenya's
digital infrastructure.
