The 10th AfriGEO Symposium
has officially opened at the Obasanjo Space Centre in Abuja, Nigeria, bringing
together the African Earth observation community under the theme "Earth
Observation for a Resilient Africa," the Group on Earth Observations (GEO)
said.
Opening the pre-symposium
day, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, Director General of the National Space Research and
Development Agency (NASRDA) and GEO Principal for Nigeria, set the tone for the
gathering.
"Transform data into
practical intelligence to feed decisions," Adepoju said. He reminded
participants that the strength of AfriGEO lies in collaboration.
Energy was high as the 150
attendees took part in hands-on workshops covering:
Flood forecasting with
GEOGLOWS and RSS Hydro; crop mapping and yield estimation with the Group on
Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring (GEOGLAM); AI for Earth
observation with Esri; and field data collection with KoboToolbox.
Other sessions focused on
open data and cloud tools with Digital Earth Africa, and satellite data and
capacity development with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
