Kenya and Brazil are
strengthening cooperation on data protection through a peer exchange between
Kenya’s Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) and Brazil’s National
Data Protection Authority (ANPD), with discussions focused on cross-border data
flows, regulation and enforcement.
Senior Deputy Data
Commissioner Oscar Otieno led the Kenyan delegation during the engagement,
which provided an opportunity for the two authorities to share experiences and
approaches to data protection oversight in increasingly interconnected digital
economies.
Key discussions covered
adequacy decisions and cross-border data transfers, as well as regulatory and
enforcement practices, monitoring, technological innovation, research and
strategic governance.
The two authorities also
exchanged insights into evolving data protection frameworks and institutional
approaches to regulating emerging technologies while protecting individuals’
rights.
For Kenya, the engagement
provides an opportunity to draw on international regulatory experience,
strengthen institutional capacity and improve approaches to data protection as
businesses and public institutions increasingly operate across borders.
The peer exchange also
highlighted the growing importance of cooperation among data protection
authorities as digital economies become more interconnected and data
increasingly moves across jurisdictions.
