The Bank of Ghana has called
for stronger coordination among stakeholders in the financial ecosystem to
unlock the next phase of digital finance innovation and expand access to
financial services, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Second Deputy Governor of
the Bank of Ghana, Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu, made the call during the
Distinguished Digital Finance Lecture held in Accra, under the theme “Building
Financial Systems That Innovate at Scale.”
Mrs. Asante-Asiedu said
Ghana has already established strong foundations for digital financial
innovation, with the priority now shifting towards greater coordination among
institutions and industry players to maximise the impact of existing
infrastructure.
“Ghana already has real
foundations for scaled financial innovation. The task ahead of us is not
invention. It is coordination,” she said.
She pointed to the rapid
growth of Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem, noting that mobile money
platforms processed 954 million transactions valued at approximately GH¢493
billion in June 2026 alone.
According to the Second
Deputy Governor, the scale of digital payments demonstrates the country’s
growing capacity to support financial innovation. However, she said financial
inclusion must move beyond providing access to transaction accounts and mobile
wallets.
She called for a financial
system that enables individuals and businesses to access credit, insurance and
investment opportunities on fair terms and when needed.
Mrs. Asante-Asiedu said
deeper collaboration across the financial sector would be critical to building
an ecosystem capable of delivering more innovative, secure and inclusive
financial services.
