Namibia’s
Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) has concluded the
inaugural MICT Open Debate Championship 2026, an initiative aimed at promoting
critical thinking, informed dialogue and youth leadership around digital
issues.
The
two-day competition, which ended on August 1, 2026, was held at the University
of Namibia (UNAM) and brought together young debaters from across the country
to engage in discussions on topical issues related to technology, digital
transformation and society.
Speaking
during the closing ceremony, MICT Executive Director Linda Nakale commended
participants, coaches, adjudicators and partners for contributing to the
success of the championship.
Nakale
said the importance of the competition extended beyond winning, highlighting
the role of debate in encouraging the exchange of ideas, strengthening
analytical skills and empowering young people to become future leaders.
She
reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting programmes that encourage
dialogue, youth development and the development of skills needed for Namibia’s
evolving digital landscape.
The
championship recognized outstanding performances among participating teams,
with winners receiving financial awards and medals. The first-place team
received N$15,000 and gold medals, while the second-place team was awarded
N$8,000 and silver medals. The third-place team received N$5,000 and bronze
medals, while the fourth-place team received N$2,000 along with MICT-branded
items.
The
MICT Open Debate Championship forms part of broader efforts to create platforms
where young Namibians can discuss emerging issues, develop communication skills
and contribute ideas toward national development.
The
ministry said the successful completion of the inaugural competition
demonstrates the importance of creating spaces for respectful, informed and
solution-driven conversations among young people.
