Uganda
has called for greater participation of developing countries in shaping global
artificial intelligence (AI) policies, standards and systems during the
inaugural United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance held in Geneva,
Switzerland.
Uganda’s
delegation, led by Minister of State for National Guidance Hon. Alioni Yorke
Odria and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance Dr.
Aminah Zawedde, participated in high-level discussions focused on building a
safe, responsible and inclusive AI ecosystem.
Delivering
Uganda’s national statement on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni, Hon. Odria
stressed the need for developing countries to have an active role in
determining the direction of AI governance rather than being passive recipients
of global decisions.
He
highlighted Uganda’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence to
support transformation across key sectors, including agriculture, healthcare,
education, tourism and public service delivery.
The
Minister also called for stronger international cooperation to address
challenges affecting AI adoption in developing countries, particularly gaps in
digital infrastructure, technical skills and access to computing resources.
Uganda
emphasized that responsible AI governance must reflect the realities and
priorities of all nations, ensuring that emerging technologies contribute to
inclusive digital transformation, innovation and sustainable development.
The
Global Dialogue on AI Governance brought together governments, international
organisations, technology experts and other stakeholders to explore approaches
for strengthening cooperation and establishing frameworks for the responsible
development and deployment of artificial intelligence globally.
