The
African Telecommunications Union African Telecommunications Union has
underscored the importance of national-level action in driving regional digital
transformation, during its participation in Mozambique’s 5th National
Communications Conference held in Maputo.
The
Union attended the conference at the invitation of the National Communications
Institute of Mozambique INCM - Autoridade Reguladora das Comunicações, where it
engaged policymakers, regulators and development partners on strategies to
advance the country’s communications and ICT agenda.
ATU
Secretary-General John Omo highlighted that meaningful regional progress
depends on strong national commitment and leadership, noting that decisions
within the ICT sector are heavily influenced by political will at the highest
level of government. He welcomed the presence of President Daniel Chapo Daniel
Chapo at the conference, describing it as a demonstration of the importance
Mozambique places on the digital sector.
The
Union used the platform to advocate for a coordinated communications agenda
focused on digital transformation, emergency preparedness, inclusion and
resilience. It also commended Mozambique for integrating connectivity into
broader state functions, including citizen engagement, public protection and
national development.
The
conference brought together senior stakeholders from across the global ICT
ecosystem, including International Telecommunication Union Secretary-General
Doreen Bogdan-Martin Doreen Bogdan-Martin and Commonwealth Telecommunications
Organisation Secretary-General Bernadette Lewis Bernadette Lewis, alongside
Mozambique’s Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation Américo
Muchanga and other sector leaders.
