Nigeria has presented its activities under the United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER) during the 69th session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) currently taking place in Vienna, Austria.

The presentation was delivered by Dr. Baba-Ma’aji Rakiya, Acting Director of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), under Agenda Item 13, which focuses on the use of space technology within the United Nations system.

Speaking at the session, Dr. Rakiya highlighted Nigeria’s contributions through NASRDA to the implementation of UN-SPIDER initiatives, which promote the use of space-based technologies in disaster risk reduction, emergency response, and sustainable development.

The presentation provided an opportunity for Nigeria to share its experiences and progress in leveraging satellite and geospatial technologies to support disaster management and strengthen resilience against natural and human-induced hazards.

UNCOPUOS serves as the primary international forum for the development of international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space. The committee brings together member states, international organizations, and space stakeholders to discuss policy, technical, legal, and scientific issues related to space activities.
