Kenya
is exploring the possibility of hosting a major international technology event
as part of efforts to strengthen Nairobi’s position as a leading technology and
innovation hub on the African continent.
The
initiative was discussed during a meeting between John Kipchumba Tanui,
Principal Secretary for the State Department of ICT and Digital Economy, and
senior officials from the GSMA, including Angela Wamola, Caroline Mbugua, and
John Giusti.
The
discussions focused on the potential establishment of a consolidated global
technology platform in Nairobi that would bring together governments,
technology companies, investors, innovators, startups, development partners,
academic institutions, and policymakers from around the world.
According
to the State Department of ICT and Digital Economy, the proposed event would
serve as a catalyst for investment, innovation, job creation, and international
collaboration while enhancing Kenya’s profile as a destination for technology
and business.
Officials
pointed to the success of events such as Mobile World Congress Barcelona, which
has become a major driver of economic activity and global visibility for
Barcelona. Kenya aims to leverage its growing digital economy, vibrant
innovation ecosystem, and strategic location to create a similar platform that
supports regional and global technology engagement.
The
proposed initiative aligns with Kenya’s Digital Superhighway and Creative
Economy Agenda being implemented under the leadership of William Samoei Ruto.
Government officials believe that hosting a globally recognised technology
event could accelerate digital transformation, attract foreign direct
investment, strengthen partnerships, and provide new opportunities for young
people and technology entrepreneurs.
The
engagement with GSMA forms part of broader efforts to position Nairobi as a
premier destination for technology showcases, innovation partnerships, and
digital investment in Africa. Stakeholders noted that collaboration with
international industry organisations will be critical in advancing the vision
of making Nairobi one of the continent’s foremost technology hubs.
If
realised, the event would provide a platform for showcasing African innovation
while facilitating dialogue and cooperation on emerging technologies and
digital policy issues affecting the region and the wider global economy.
