The inaugural Africa Space
Law and Policy Conference has concluded in South Africa, bringing together
stakeholders from across the continent to discuss the future of space
governance, regulation, and sustainable sector development.
Hosted with the
participation of the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), the
conference provided a platform for governments, academic institutions, industry
representatives, policymakers, and legal experts to examine the evolving legal
and policy frameworks needed to support Africa’s growing space ecosystem.
Over two days, delegates
engaged in discussions on key issues affecting the continent’s space sector,
including regulatory harmonisation, international cooperation, governance
frameworks, and strategies for fostering sustainable growth in space-related activities.
Participants emphasized the
importance of continued collaboration among governments, academia, industry,
and legal professionals to create an enabling environment that supports
innovation, investment, and responsible space development across Africa.
Following the formal
conference sessions, delegates gathered at SANSA’s Hartebeesthoek facility for
a networking event aimed at strengthening professional relationships and
encouraging greater cooperation among stakeholders in the African space sector.
Organisers noted that the
conference represents an important milestone in advancing dialogue on the
governance of Africa’s expanding space activities and in supporting efforts to
build a coordinated and sustainable framework for the continent’s future participation
in the global space economy.
The event also provided
opportunities for participants to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and
explore partnerships that could contribute to the long-term development of
Africa’s space industry.
