The Deputy
Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of South Africa, Ms Nomalungelo
Gina, has articulated the nation’s strategic priorities in clean energy at two
high-level international meetings held in Japan.
Participating
in the Ministerial Meeting on Sustainable Fuels and the 7th Hydrogen Energy
Ministerial Meeting during Expo 2025 Osaka, Deputy Minister Gina outlined South
Africa’s commitment to hydrogen demand creation, sustainable fuels, and
inclusive industrialization. The meetings, convened by Japan’s Ministry of
Economy, Trade and Industry, gathered global leaders to address pressing energy
and climate challenges.

The Ministerial
Meeting on Sustainable Fuels, launched by Japan and Brazil in 2024, seeks to
build worldwide momentum for the development and adoption of sustainable fuels
like biofuels and e-fuels. The Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting aims to
accelerate the global shift toward a hydrogen-based economy through enhanced
international cooperation and knowledge sharing.
In her address,
Deputy Minister Gina outlined South Africa’s comprehensive policy approach,
which includes expanding decarbonisation efforts to incorporate biofuels and
carbon capture, use, and storage. She pointed to domestic initiatives such as
the Platinum Valley Initiative and the registration of Strategic Integrated
Projects, which are designed to decarbonise heavy industries and integrate
hydrogen into the power, mining, and transport sectors.

"Sustainable
fuels play a critical role in advancing our decarbonisation efforts by
providing fuels that can power our industries, transport systems and economies,
while reducing greenhouse gas emissions in support of our climate change
commitments," stated Deputy Minister Gina.
