The Ministry of
Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has launched a Training of
Trainers (ToT) workshop under the National Girls-in-ICT Programme, aimed at
equipping 100 teachers from the Upper West Region with advanced digital skills.
The five-day training, which commenced on September 18, 2025, is being held at
the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development
Studies in Wa.

Selected from
all 11 districts of the region, the participating teachers will receive
intensive instruction in digital literacy and computer skills. Following the
training, these educators are expected to cascade their knowledge to 1,000
schoolgirls from Primary Four to Junior High School level, helping to inspire
and prepare the next generation of female innovators.
At the opening
ceremony, the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq.,
commended the Ministry for selecting the region as a focal point for the
initiative. He emphasized the critical role of teachers as mentors and role
models in shaping Ghana’s digital future and urged them to approach the
training with dedication and purpose.
Mr. Austin
Hesse, Director of Policy, Planning, Budgeting Monitoring and Evaluation at the
Ministry, highlighted the transformative impact of the programme. Since its
inception, the Girls-in-ICT initiative has trained over 15,981 girls and 1,292
teachers nationwide in ICT, coding, machine learning, and other digital skills.
The programme aims to close the digital participation gap, particularly among
young girls, and foster greater gender inclusivity in technology.

The initiative
will culminate in a competition, mentorship sessions, and an awards ceremony
where the top 100 performing girls will receive certificates and laptops, with
additional prizes for the three highest achievers. This training in the Upper
West Region follows a similar programme in the Volta Region, with the Savannah
Region scheduled to host the initiative next.
