The National
Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) has officially commenced
the development of Namibia’s first National Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Strategy. This initiative comes under the directive of the Ministry of
Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC), marking a
pivotal step in the country's technological advancement.
To spearhead
this critical national project, the NCRST has appointed a diverse group of AI
experts to form Technical Advisory Committees (TACs). These committees are
tasked with leading the comprehensive strategy development process.

During the
inaugural meeting of the National Artificial Intelligence TAC, the Director of
Research and Innovation at MEIYSAC, Lovisa Immanuel outlined the strategy's
core objectives. She emphasized the strategy’s role in driving sustainable
economic growth and fostering innovation by enhancing productivity, creating
new industries, and generating high-skilled employment opportunities for Namibians.
A major focus will be on education and talent development, advocating for a
holistic approach that integrates AI understanding from primary education
through university, complemented by extensive workforce reskilling programs.
Professor Dr.
Anicia Peters, CEO of the NCRST, presented the draft Terms of Reference (ToR)
for the AI TACs, which detail the committees' objectives, structure, functions,
and projected timelines. Following a productive discussion and subsequent
refinement, the members formally adopted the ToR, establishing a clear and
robust framework to guide the strategy's development.

A key
procedural outcome of the meeting was the election of Chairpersons for each
Technical Advisory Committee, ensuring effective operation and governance
throughout the process. The overall development of the national strategy will
be coordinated by an NCRST team led by Dr. Simeon Hamukoshi, Strategic Projects
Coordinator.
